Stuck on where to go for your next holiday? We bring you the 10 best holiday destinations according to TripAdvisor
If you’re looking for some holiday inspiration, look no further than this list of TripAdvisor’s Top 10 destinations around the world, as voted for by the travellers who visited last year.
10. New York City, USA
Sneaking in at number 10, it’s the Big Apple. Surprisingly low on the list but there's some stiff competition. The city that never sleeps is on most people's bucket list with so much to see and do here. From seeing a Broadway show, to cruising by the statue of liberty, looking down on the stunning city from the top of the Empire State Building to looking back at it from Brooklyn Bridge, you won't be disappointed.
Don’t miss the whispering gallery in Grand Central Station. Head to the lower concourse outside the Oyster bar and stand in one corner of the archway. Get a friend to stand in the opposite corner and whisper. Trust us, just do it.
9. Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul is the perfect city break, so it's not surprising that it's made it into the top 10 destinations. Enjoy everything the Turkish culture has to offer, from the mesmerising Whirling Dervishes to the scenic Bosphorus River Cruise.
Did you know, 99% of Istanbul residents are Muslim.
8. Marrakech, Morocco
Visit a traditional souk before heading out into the desert for a camel ride across the sand dunes. When you're ready to clean up, head for the hammam (bathhouse) for ultimate relaxation.
Top tip: everything, and we mean everything, comes with a price in Marrakech. So if you ask someone for help or snap a picture of a snake charmer at work, don't be surprised when they expect you to cough up.
7. Prague, Czech Republic
Perfect for loved up couples and groups of friends alike, Prague is sitting pretty at number 7 in the list. With trendy bars and top restaurants galore, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Look out for Prague Castle, the largest in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
6. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is the perfect mix of beach holiday and city break, so it’s easy to see how it made it so high in the list. There’s impressive architecture at every turn and plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from so you’re bound to find something to suit your taste.
Did you know:
Antoni Gaudi was not the original architect to work on the Sagrada Família. Francesc del Villar was commissioned to design it first. He resigned after a year and Gaudi took the reins, completely redesigning it to the magnificent piece of architecture that’s still under construction today.
5. Crete, Greece
As the largest of the Greek islands, there’s plenty to see and do in Crete. Whether you fancy relaxing on the beach or visiting the ancient ruins - or maybe a bit of both – you certainly won’t be bored.
Did you know:
Hippocrates claimed that Crete has ‘healing air’, which seems to be true as Cretans have been found to be the healthiest people in the world. Although that’s likely to be down to their diet and lifestyle.
4. Bali, Indonesia
It’s taken over as the ultimate luxury holiday destination in recent years and it’s easy to see why. It’s the perfect place for relaxing, exploring, and generally escaping the stresses of modern Western life.
Don’t miss Lovina Beach, covered in black sand from the cooled lava of the Mt Agung volcano.
3. Rome, Italy
Take a trip to the Eternal city for a taste of Italian culture. Eat, drink and be merry in this beautiful city. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
DO make an effort to learn some of their language, even if it’s just the basics.
DON’T turn up early for dinner. Italians generally have their evening meal from 9pm onwards, and many restaurants don’t start serving dinner until at least 7pm, so don’t expect an early supper.
2. London, United Kingdom
In second place, it’s our Great Capital, the perfect staycation for those who don’t like to travel too far.
Five things you didn’t know about London:
- Big Ben is the name of the bell, not the clock tower
- It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament
- Marching troops are ordered to break their step on the Chelsea Embankment and Albert Bridge so the vibrations don't damage the structure.
- Black Cab drivers have to learn 25,000 streets and 20,000 places of interest to qualify as a driver.
- The Millennium Dome is big enough to hold the Great Pyramid at Giza
1. Paris, France
Topping the list is none other than the most romantic city in the world, so pack up your things and head off with your significant other to enjoy a river cruise along the Seine and a luxury meal for 2 at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
Did you know:
The main bell in Notre Dame is called Emmanuel and weighs over 13 tonnes (approximately the same weight as 3 African elephants)
