With the recent release of the new number plates, now is a great time to bag a good deal on older stock. So we bring you a list of some of the best used 4x4’s and SUV’s on the market.

Best for….family trips

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 has lots of space and comes with 7 seats as standard, so is perfect for those big family outings. It’s also the only SUV that can fit three children’s seats in the middle row.

Whatcar advises that you check the electric mirrors to make sure they’re working as they should be due to a common fault. Any trouble with the diesel engine could indicate issues that are very costly to fix, so walk away if you get the feeling something’s not quite right.

Best for…. low running costs

Nissan Qashqai

The Qasquai is reliable, smooth to drive and has scored 5 stars for safety and security on Whatcar. What’s more, the 1.5Litre engine variant of this model is also particularly well known for its low running costs, making it perfect for anybody looking for a fuel efficient car that is easy and fun to drive.

The Qashqai isn’t the most spacious SUV out there and there isn’t a great amount of room in the boot if you are planning a long trip.

Best for…. adult only trips

Land Rover Discovery

Comfortably fits 7 adults in with lots of space for storage, so is perfect for long journeys with a group of friends. Plus, the Discovery is well known for its excellent grip and ability to cope in any off road conditions - perfect for those looking for adventure in a car.

Whatcar advises that the Land Rover Discovery isn’t the cheapest option out there when it comes to running costs, so don’t get stung by a car you can’t afford to keep.

Best for….those looking for a bargain

Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail is a really easy drive, and with the option of making 2 extra seats in the boot, you can accommodate the whole family on your road trip if you need to.

It’s not the most modern interior. The Nissan X-Trail hasn’t kept up with the cosmetic developments of its rivals.

Best for…comfort

Honda CR-V

Voted by Whatcar as a spacious, practical, and comfortable car, this car is ideal if you are planning long road trips. With a really spacious boot, you will be able to fit in all your luggage comfortably. Because this isn’t a 4 wheel drive, the Honda is a lot more fuel efficient than other SUVs.

The Honda CR-V isn’t known as the best off roader so isn’t great if you are planning on handling any rough terrain.
