Guest bedrooms look lovely, but are rarely used. Make more of the space with these alternative ideas.
We all love the idea of having a guest bedroom, but in reality, they’re barely ever used. So why do we keep them? We’ve put together some alternative suggestions for more fun ways to make the most of the space.
If you have young children or pets, turning your spare bedroom into a playroom is a great way of spending more time with them, whilst keeping the rest of the house nice and tidy.
Try setting up a tipi or painting a wall with blackboard paint and let the little ones go wild, with a big bean bag and a bookshelf at the other end for quiet time.
Work out room
If you love to keep fit, get all of your equipment into the spare room and turn it into your own home gym.
On the other hand, if you don’t love to keep fit and are always looking for some motivation, creating your own work out space could be just what you need.
Be sure to paint it a colour that motivates you and invest in a good speaker or wall-mounted TV if you like to be entertained while you work out.
If you prefer something less intense but still like to keep moving, a yoga room could be right up your street. Get some incense, invest in a good quality matt and off you go! If you need a helping hand to get you started, the Simply Yoga app is great for making it nice and easy for beginners.
If exercise isn’t really your thing but you still want your spare room to be somewhere you go to deal with the stresses and anxieties of everyday life, why not try turning it into a wellness room?
Fill the room with things that bring you joy and do whatever helps you relax.
If you’re a bookworm, turn your spare room into a reader’s retreat. Start with a nice comfortable chair, some candles and a lamp. Put up shelves along one wall or more if required and hey presto! You’ve got yourself a library. Extra points if you get a little step ladder to reach the books on the top shelf.
Whether you regularly work from home or not, it can still be nice to have a home office. You can deal with and store bills and other papers in there, or use it as a space for the kids to do their homework.
Not only will filling your spare room with all of your clothes, shoes and accessories give you somewhere nice and private to get ready on a morning, it will also clear some space in other areas of the home such as your bedroom.
If you and your family love movie nights, a home cinema could be the perfect way to use the space. Get a nice big screen or projector with surround sound and a snack cupboard and you’re good to go!
