Nutritious snacks to keep you going.
Snacking when working from home can be a disaster. Suddenly, all of those sugary treats you have hiding in the cupboard are not only tempting you as you relax after a long day’s graft, but all day long and after every stressful conference call. It can be hard to resist.
The best way to make sure you don’t make bad choices throughout the day is to have a healthy alternative that’s just as quick and easy to grab.
Here’s 10 of our favourite healthy go to snacks – enjoy!
1. Apple slices and peanut butter
When the sweet tooth calls, this quick and easy classic snack is great for curbing the need for sugar. Simply spread some peanut butter over a slice of apple and enjoy.
2. Mashed avocado on whole wheat crackers
Avocado makes a great nutritional snack, just make sure you don’t have too much of it as it’s high in fat. Mash half an avocado with some seasoning and a drop of lime juice then spread it on a whole wheat cracker for a snack that feels genuinely filling.
3. Baked sweet potato chips
Slice up some sweet potato nice and thin then bake in the oven with a couple of sprays of healthy cooking oil and some salt and pepper until golden and crispy. Once you’ve nailed the cooking, you can start to experiment with different flavourings, such as smoky paprika or hot chilli powder.
4. Healthy banana ice cream
Sometimes you just need something that feels indulgent and this is the perfect recipe for it. Slice up a banana and lay each slide out on a baking tray. Freeze, then blitz until smooth. All the taste of real ice cream without the calories.
The beauty of a smoothie is that you get all the goodness of whatever fruit and vegetables you throw in together in one delicious and satisfying drink. Try adding some super foods for extra goodness, especially ones that you don’t like to eat. For example, spinach or kale.
This one may be best to get ready the night before to make sure they’re available when the hunger pangs hit. Chop up some of your favourite vegetables – carrots, bell peppers, cucumber – whatever you fancy! Finish off with a dip of tzatziki and enjoy!
7. Greek yogurt granola bars
If you like to get a little creative in the kitchen then this is the snack for you. Mix together some of your favourite oats, nuts and dried fruit with some honey and shape into bars or balls. Leave to set in the fridge then add a coating of Greek yogurt and allow to set again. Delicious and nutritious!
8. Tuna stuffed celery
It doesn’t get much healthier than this. Simply stuff some celery batons with tuna down the middle et voila!
9. Chocolate covered almonds
Melt some dark chocolate and coat almonds for a quick and easy grab and go snack.
Popcorn is a great alternative to crisps and other starchy snacks. The calories and fat are relatively low and if you make your own or choose wisely you can keep the salt and sugar to a minimum too! Win-win.
