We caught up with the travel experts on the best places to travel in Europe this autumn.

Autumn is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time exploring with loved ones, but don’t just take our word for it. We caught up with four of the UK’s best travel experts for their recommendations on the best places to travel during the autumn.

Zurich, Switzerland

“My favourite place for an autumn break in Europe is Zurich. Just as the weather is getting cooler, I love to warm up with some fondue at Swiss Chuchi Restaurant. Zurich is an incredibly picturesque city with many chocolate shops, cafes and a small Old Town with narrow alleyways. Make sure you stop by the Zeughauskeller beer hall for some beer and hearty German food - it will feel like you're at Oktoberfest. I like to walk up to the top of the hill to Lindenhof for views of the river Limmat and the Old Town - with the orange leaves falling from the trees, it's really pretty and peaceful.”

Venice, Italy

Venice is one of my favourite places for a European autumn break. Venice is a gorgeous city so it’s very busy during the peak summer months. It can become crowded, very hot, a little bit smelly and extremely expensive. But in the autumn months it’s quieter, cooler and more affordable so it’s the perfect time to visit. You can appreciate the beautiful city with fewer crowds and without getting too hot as you walk around!”

Monica Scott, The Travel Hack

Leipzig, Germany

“This autumn, head to Leipzig for a cultural and outdoor adventure. Start by hiring a canoe at Stadthafen and paddle down the river running through the city to the Cospudener See. If you arrange it in advance, you can hire a bike and cycle back into the city.

“Once an industrial hub, this city in the Eastern German state of Saxony has invested heavily in art and music. Download the music trail app or attend a concert at the beautiful Gewandhaus concert hall, soon to be celebrating its 25th anniversary.

“Visit the artists and galleries at the Spinnerei cultural centre or discover the emerging street art. If you are short of time, you'll find some giant murals at the central Hauptbahnhoff, which is one of my favourite station buildings. Pop in for refreshments and dream up where else you can travel to in Germany by train. Or plan your next visit to Leipzig - it's not long until the Christmas market!”

Kirstie Pelling, The Family Adventure Project

Poiana Brasov, Romania

“Autumn in Europe is my favourite season. The foliage looks gorgeous, and I believe it to be the best time for a weekend away in the mountains. The air is fresh, the landscape looks incredible and the evenings are usually foggy. Can't imagine anything better than spending some time in a wooden chalet, hidden in the dense forests of Poiana Brasov, Romania . One step outside and you'll be amazed by the surrounding mountain peaks. Ideal for romance or adventure seekers.”
