We’ve all got a bucket list, but if yours doesn’t include a trip to these once-in-a-lifetime destinations, it needs updating immediately.
You only live once, and in the words of the great Frank Sinatra, you should do it your way. But if you don’t have the below places on your bucket list, you’re doing it wrong. Whatever your idea of a dream holiday, we give you our top picks of places you MUST visit in your lifetime.
If your thing is… beach breaks
A scattering of beautiful, quaint islands in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is world-famous for its crystal clear waters and luxurious beaches. There are plenty options for making your trip an action-packed one, but we’d say the Maldives is best suited for those who are simply looking to relax and enjoy the finer things in life, if only for a week or two.
Traveller tip: EVERYTHING except fish and coconuts has to be imported, so The Maldives is not a cheap holiday when it comes to eating and drinking. Bear that in mind when budgeting.
If you’re looking for a slightly more diverse landscape, but still with amazing white sandy beaches and clear blue seas and skies, look no further than Mauritius. More mountainous than The Maldives, Mauritius offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Boasting a breath-taking array of flora and fauna, you’ll never be stuck for something to explore, without having to compromise on the luxury.
Traveller tip: As a once British Colony, cars still drive on the left hand side.
If your thing is… exciting explorations
The Maasai Mara, Kenya
Explorations don’t get much more exciting than the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok County, Kenya. Here, you can see all of the ‘big five’ game animals in their natural habitats – the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard and the Black rhinoceros. You can stay within the reserve at a number of different camps, and if you visit during July-October you may just be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the incredible migration of the wildebeest.
Traveller tip: The birthing season runs December to February. So if you’d like to see some magical scenes of baby wildlife coming into the world, this is a great time to visit.
If your thing is… immersing yourself in different cultures
Very few places in the world are as culturally different to the UK as China, so if change is what you’re after, you should definitely consider a trip to Beijing. Explore this fast moving City and feel completely free to let go of Western restraints. What’s more, you can cross the Great Wall off your bucket list too – two birds with one stone.
Traveller tip: Be careful on the roads, as this is probably your greatest risk as a traveller to Beijing. Traffic levels are staggering and Chinese drivers certainly aren’t as courteous as UK drivers, with some failing to stop even at red lights.
If your thing is… laid back living
Napa Valley, USA
If relaxed nights watching the sunset and drinking wine are right up your street, there’s no better, more luxurious place to do it than Napa Valley in the USA. It’s not all about vineyards and there’s much more to do besides, but one thing is for certain, a trip to Napa Valley is perfect for relaxing and unwinding.
Traveller tip: A trip to the famous wineries doesn't always come cheap, but this website boasts all of the available coupons and money saving vouchers all in one place, so be sure to check it out before you go.
